2023, I made a conscious decision to stop working on weekends which was very hard for me, but with one or two scares last year, no one needed to tell me twice that I needed to be intentional about balancing my workload and not treating Saturday and Sunday like full on working days.
So I had scheduled a coaching session with a client and as we were dissecting her CV, one of the key things that stood out in the first 3 seconds was her Profile which read ” I am a enthusiastic, proactive, and hardworking professional with years of experience…..”
I stopped her right there and asked her a question
“If I woke you up from sleep on Monday at 3 am would you be enthusiastic? Her answer was no, so I said you see? You are using words that are not sustainable to describe yourself because you are not enthusiastic ALL THE TIME but you are a strategy Project Director all the time because it is your skill.
Attributes are variables that can change based on how you feel. Skills are developed, it’s an area of strength that has been acquired over time. When describing yourself as a professional, use words that describe your expertise as opposed to using descriptive words that do not focus on your craft.
Buzzwords are not what employers want to read, they want to know who you are, and what you can offer to achieve their corporate objectives.
Always remember your CV speaks for you in a room where you cannot speak for yourself. Don’t be jaded by the ideology that when you sit in front of the hiring manager, you can explain yourself.
That opportunity will never come if your CV doesn’t tell me why I need to meet you.
Employers want to know these three (3) things in a nutshell:
- Who are you? professional or personal achievements, work experience etc.
- What do you do? Your Skill, expertise, professional advancement academics, etc.
- How will your expertise impact my business? What differentiates you? Your ability to promote Growth, and/or implement processes for sustainability.
The time for trial and error is over, budgets are tight. and resources are limited. Employers are paying for skills first, then measure how your attributes will contribute to your productivity.
